Target Audience

The two Hip Hop/RnB magazines i am going to look at to help me with my coursework task are Vibe and The Source.

Vibe's target demographic was predominantly young, urban followers of hip-hop culture and to specify the age range the magazine focus's on is 12-to 24-year-olds, this information was on the magazines website - www.vibe.com

The Source focus's more on rap but also covers politics and culture. The target audience for this magazine is a fairly niche market, as it will only really appeal to fans of Rap & Hip-Hop music and culture. The age group this magazine appeals to is younger people from teenagers up to early twenties however like any other magazine anybody who likes the genre can read this magazine.

In terms of Demographics (Socio-economic classifications) theses magazines would probably be more popular with D's but again it really depends on culture and interests.

For both of these magazines part of the audience would be what the market calls "aspirers" these are people that want to have more money or status and will often by “flashy” products to try to send out messages about status. In the Hip Hop culture it is all about status whether your a rapper, producer, dancer, graffi artist or even drug dealer. Its all about who has the nicest and most expensive jewellery, clothes and cars.

Also for both of these magazines part of the target audience would be "problem kids" these are people who might have come from a difficult background and havent had the easiest start in life, alot of these kids turn to music to express themselves, for example rap music. They might see the magazine and the artists and people featured in it as inpiration.
